Driving Insight into Operational Drivers of Financial Performance
The Situation
The Company was lacking readily available operational insight and needed support from Accordion to conduct the following: assess the application environment, determine readiness for a visualization exercise, and develop the outputs in Power BI.
Our team was engaged to conduct A 3-4-week assessment to understand accessibility, structure, and integrity of each of the core financial and operational datasets. As for the systems, the GL system was FinancialForce, the EMR was CentralReach and the supply/demand of ABA therapists and patients on the spectrum was managed in Salesforce.

The Execution
Phase 1: The Deep-Dive Assessment
- Our Accordion team developed a back-to-front and front-to-back process; this dual track process enabled us to understand the needed operational outputs from both the Sponsor and the Management team and identify the exact data tables and data fields within each dataset to ensure accessibility, structure, and integrity
- As our team began this assessment, COVID-19 began to impact the business; we responded by developing daily dashboards to provide visibility to the Sponsor and Management about critical operational drivers by business segment, region, etc.
- The initial assessment resulted in the following:
- We developed a detailed list of financial and operational KPIs to outline trends in providers, patients, and payors.
Phase 2: The Visualization Process
- The visualization process was a combination of financial outputs driven by detailed GL-mapping to produce adjusted P&L’s (excluding addbacks from cost structure), with results presented by state, segment, and company
- Also included in this workstream were detailed SG&A breakdown, AP analyses, AR breakdown by payor, and detailed pipeline overviews
The Results
Our Accordion team identified 100+ KPIs and developed a visualization tool that enables different levels of Management (Sponsor, CEO, Operations, etc.) to have real-time insight into critical business trends. This insight has already enabled stronger decision-making during an uncertain time. With trends in the fundamentals of the business shifting daily, our work has eliminated the Sponsor’s concern of a delayed reaction due to lack of critical intel.
